Zip zap, it’s the season of the scorpion! This fixed water sign is associated with intensity, mystery, loyalty, taboo and *insert dramatic sound here* the underworld. It’s ruled by Mars or Pluto, depending on who you ask.
This week, we’re diving into the fascinating story behind how this small but deadly critter wound up in the sky, a few scorpion fun facts and Scorpio season hair inspo.
The Earth, the sky and a tale of two giants
According to Greek mythology, Orion was a giant demigod who joined forces with Artemis, goddess of the hunt. A prolific hunter, Orion let his passion for murder get ahead of him and decided to kill every animal in the land. This enraged Earth goddess Gaia who sent a giant scorpion to deal with the overzealous hero, ultimately leading to the death of both man and beast. As a thank you, Gaia awarded the scorpion a place in the stars, giving us the Scorpio constellation.
Scorpions are cool
Scorpions are resilient arachnids commonly found in hot and dry climates. Distantly related to spiders, it’s believed that they were amongst the earliest sea critters to venture onto land, making them older than dinosaurs by several million years (respect your scorpion elders, human!). They also have the ability to survive extreme temperatures. Scientists have frozen scorpions only to have them shake it off and walk away once thawed. Their low metabolic rate also allows them to survive without food for up to a year. When they do eat, they digest their prey outside their bodies by turning them into liquid goo to slurp up *shudder*.
Long braid love
Nothing says Scorpio fierceness like a single long braid. Bonus points if it’s fiery red.
